In our previous Pilot Spotlight, we spoke with Michael Crider. Michael is a Flight Crew Training Instructor that flies in his spare time and is another individual in the DroneBase pilot network that completed ITC Training at the FLIR Infrared Training Center. Michael shares his tips to getting the most out of the course and what the experience at the ITC Training meant to him. This week, we will be introducing you to one of our New York based pilots, Frank Galasso.
Pilot Frank Galasso flies primarily in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut region and has been working with DroneBase since May 2016. Frank is a Video Production Company Owner, Broadway/TV/Film Actor/Singer, and also a part-time drone pilot supplementing his income doing what he loves. We asked Frank a few questions about his experiences throughout his drone pilot career. Read more below.
I primarily fly with my DJI Inspire 1 V2 but also list a Mavic Pro in my profile.
The subject of preparation and flying. Each shoot has something new and different. Even if it is a site I have visited repeatedly, (construction site) things about it have changed between each visit. There is always something new to capture and that is what makes each flight an exciting challenge.
Lately, I've been capturing a lot of construction sites with the occasional commercial real estate property sprinkled in. In the construction industry, it's really cool and interesting to be able to film heavy machinery in its element. Capturing the capabilities, of all the different machines, and the progress being made on the project between visits, from the air, is a lot of fun.
I had one shoot that required me to fly along with an exotic car, along a twisty road, on the side of a mountain in New Jersey. It was such a fun day getting all different angles of the car while trying to keep up with it at the same time. It was the perfect combination of an awesome subject to capture, challenging shoot, and amazing scenery.
My dream drone would be a compact, folding drone, that could carry a high quality micro 4/3/full frame gimbaled camera, with sensors and cameras surrounding the entire drone, with the ability to stream a live feed of everything around it.
DroneBase has been a huge player in my work with drones. They help me to make a consistent, supplemental income from drone video/photography. If you told me when I was a kid that I would grow up to fly remote control helicopters, with cameras on them for a living, I would have thought that was the coolest. I still do! Ultimately I appreciate the opportunity to fly for DroneBase, as it has allowed me to increase my experience in becoming a drone pilot. The experiences are invaluable and will assist me greatly in my future drone endeavors.
